Bekunis (Sennosides) is indicated for the treatment of constipation. It produces a laxative effect, which is achieved through stimulation of the large bowel. The active ingredient in these tablets is made using natural senna glycosides (another name for sennosides) which are derived from the plant Senna. The leaves and fruit of this plant have been used for many years as a natural remedy for constipation, and much research has been conducted by experts which demonstrated its efficacy as a laxative.

Its mechanism of action involves stimulating colonic motility, which helps to accelerate colonic transit (the time needed for food to move through the colon) and decrease the possibility of fluid being absorbed from the feces. In addition to this, it helps to promote the secretion of fluid from the colon, thereby leading to a laxative effect. This makes it effective in the treatment of simple constipation or to evacuate the patient`s bowels before a colonoscopy is due to take place. Medical research has also taken place to determine its effects if used for irritable bowel syndrome or as a weight loss treatment.

Dosage and Administration

Bekunis (Sennosides) is provided as 20mg strength sugar coated tablets which are taken orally. Follow the dosage instructions given by your physician. Generally, adult patients will be directed by their physician to administer 1 tablet (20mg) per day. Bowel movements are usually produced 6 to 12 hours following the administration of the tablet. Your physician will tell you how long treatment is required to continue. Patients should not use laxatives for a period exceeding 1 week unless their physician specifically tells them to do so.

Side effects

If any side effects occur during treatment with Bekunis (Sennosides) tablets, make sure that your physician is informed. Some examples are listed here:

  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Sickness
  • Hypokalemia
  • Abdominal cramps

It will be necessary to cease treatment and see your physician straight away if you notice bleeding from the rectum, if no bowel movements occur after taking this laxative or if any other severe adverse events occur which are not referenced here.

Using Bekunis (Sennosides) or other laxatives for a prolonged period of time should be avoided, as doing so may cause laxative dependency syndrome, which could result in gastric motility problems when laxatives are not taken.

This medicine should not be taken by patients affected by intestinal obstruction.

Administration laxatives on a long term basis may sometimes result in problems related to the electrolyte balance in the blood, and this could trigger serious problems including liver damage.
